Sanko Holding is the main shareholder of Sanko Tekstil and Superfilm. Based in Gaziantep, Sanko Holding is a major conglomerate of Turkey with operations in energy, cement, textile, packaging, heavy industrial machines, hospital, yacht manufacturing, white-goods, financial sector, IT, education, water bottling.

Project cost is composed of Superfilm and Sanko Tekstil’s investments and associated working capital needs. The project cost is estimated to be US$156 million. IFC will provide an A loan up to US$70 million to finance the project.

Sanko Tekstil and Superfilm investments will be made in existing Gaziantep plants of the respective Companies located in Gaziantep Industrialized Zone and Corlu plant of Sanko Tekstil located outside of Tekirdag.

1)Preservation of employment in frontier region of the country: Combined Superfilm and Sanko Tekstil have around 6,000 employees most of which work in the frontier regions of Turkey. The increased capacity at Superfilm and Sanko Tekstil will enable the Borrowers to be more competitive and retain the existing work-force.
2)Exports: Superfilm and Sanko Tekstil are exporters. The investments will enable them to improve their standings in the export markets and help increase export activity and hard currency inflows into Turkey.
3)Environmental Benefits: New machines will be more energy-efficient which will increase overall energy efficiency of Superfilm and Sanko Tekstil.

1) IFC will provide long term financing which will match better with the payback period of the long term investments
2) IFC will work with Superfilm and Sanko Tekstil to improve their E&S standards
3) IFC will provide Superfilm and Sanko Tekstil with the sector expertise in their respective operations.

Key environmental and social issues for this category B project include:

EHS management systems and capability; air emissions control (including VOC-Volatile Organic Compounds) and monitoring; highly polluted wastewater/ sludge treatment and disposal for the textile business; water and energy use reduction programs, occupational health and safety (OHS); and fire safety measures.

The Project has limited potential adverse environmental and social impacts, and those that do exist are site-specific and can be resolved through the effective implementation of the action items in the ESAP, which integrate IFC’s Performance Standards requirements and good international industry practices as defined in World Bank Group (WBG)’s general and applicable sector-specific (Metal, Plastic, Rubber Products Manufacturing & Textiles Manufacturing) Environmental, Health and Safety requirements. This corporate-level investment is therefore a Category B project according to IFC’s Environmental and Social Review Procedures.
