Fosun Pharma has been listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange (ticker: 600196) since 1998. Fosun Pharma is 51.95% owned by the public and 48.05% owned by Shanghai Fosun High Technology (Group) Co., Ltd., which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fosun International Limited (“Fosun International”). Fosun International is a company incorporated and listed in Hong Kong and had revenues and profits of US$7 billion and US$945 million respectively in 2010.

The Company is headquartered in Shanghai, China and has extensive presence across China including provinces such as Chongqing, Hubei, Sichuan and Guangxi.

1. Support frontier region development. The Project will provide support to some of Fosun Pharma's subsidiaries in the frontier provinces. The Project will send a positive signal to the market in terms of the region's capabilities in carrying out relatively high value-add pharmaceutical manufacturing. 2. Support development of anti-malaria drugs. One of Fosun Pharma's subsidiaries has the exclusive right to manufacture artesunate, a treatment for malaria, in China and export artesunate-related products to 37 countries. The Project will support the expansion and upgrade of the manufacturing capacity of these anti-malaria drugs. 3. Increase access to quality and affordable medicines. Through the expansion of the Company's distribution network, the Project will increase the availability of quality and affordable medicines addressing rising demand. The Company is also expected to bring more facilities acquired through acquisitions into compliance with the Chinese GMP standards. 4. Employment creation and local linkages. The Project is expected to create a number of employment opportunities for the local communities as well as spur the growth of local suppliers of goods and services.

IFC's additionality includes: (i) support the Company's transition from a national to global phamaceutical company by sharing IFC's industry knowledge and best practices; (ii) play the role of long-term strategic investor and enhance market confidence in the Company; and (iii) provision of dedicated financing for the Company's subsidiaries operating in the frontier regions.

This is a Category B project according to IFC’s Procedure for Environmental and Social Review of Projects because a limited number of specific environmental and social impacts may result, which can be avoided or mitigated by adhering to generally recognized performance standards, guidelines or design criteria. Fosun Pharma has provided information on its current practices and policies that seek to address these risks and impacts to ensure that the proposed project complies with or, will upon implementation of specific additional agreed measures, comply with host country laws and regulations, IFC Performance Standards on Social and Environment Sustainability and applicable environmental, health and safety guidelines. Environmental, social and health and safety issues that require ameliorative measures will be addressed by Fosun Pharma as part of IFC’s investment agreements. Key issues that will require mitigation measures include (i) Adoption of IFC environmental and social Performance Standards as part of applicable requirements in its management system; (ii) establishment of emission standards consistent with international best practice, and (iii) improve resource efficiency (energy and water).
