Project Description

The IFC investment is to support the expansion plan of Beijing Shenwu Thermal Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (“Shenwu” or the Company”) in the next 3-5 years. The specific operating entities receiving IFC funds will be Shenwu (the holding company), Hubei Shenwu and Beijing Huafu (two of Shenwu’s wholly owned subsidiaries). The use of proceeds (‘the Project’) will be to finance the Company’s expansion plan, which comprises (i) the expansion of the Company’s facilities in Beijing and Hubei; (ii) development of High Temperature Air Combustion (HTAC) applications for more industries; (iii) R&D; and (iv) marketing and business development.

Development Impact

(i) Support innovation and contribute to development of clean technology sector in China. (ii) Assist the government of China to achieve its energy efficiency and CO2 emmisions reduction goals. (iii) Enable cleaner production best practices in key polluting industries in China and other developing regions. (iv) Increase Employment: with the successful implementation of the Project, the Company will create additional 600 new jobs in total in the next three years. (iv) Increase Employment: with the successful implementation of the Project, the Company will create additional 50 new jobs in its Bejing headquarters and Hubei manufacturing site.

(i) IFC's extensive investment experience in clean technology sector and client base all over the world can help the Company expand to different industry segments and regions; (ii) Financing support for R&D expenditure that is inherently risky and has a long gestation; (iii) The HTAC market is dominated by multinational companies globally. With some support from IFC, the Company aims to develop its overseas sales as an important part of its future operations.

This is a Category B project according to IFC’s Procedure for Environmental and Social Review of Projects because it may create a limited number of specific environmental and social impacts that can be avoided or mitigated by adhering to generally recognized performance standards, guidelines, or design criteria. Key environmental, health and safety, human resources and social issues that were reviewed included: environment, health and safety and social management systems (scope and implementation); management of suppliers and contractors; operational health and safety; labor and working conditions; acquisition of land use rights; raw material selection and usage and waste management.
