Project Description

Brasil Terminal Portuário (“BTP” or the “Company”) is developing a container terminal in a brownfield area within the Port of Santos to serve Sao Paulo and surrounding areas in Brazil (the “Project”). The Port of Santos, Brazil’s main port, is the largest port in Latin America and also one of the most crowded. The existing container terminals at the port are operating at capacity with ships waiting outside the port in order to be serviced. The additional container handling capacity that the Project will provide is key to relieving congestion and improving efficiency. In addition, the Project will have a significant positive impact on pollution prevention and control as it includes remediating the project site formerly used for waste disposal. Upon completion, the terminal will have a draft of 15 m and the latest container handling equipment, enabling it to serve today’s large containerships and help address the shortage of container handling capacity in Santos.

Development Impact

The Project will help strengthen the port sector in Brazil by increasing container handling capacity at the Port of Santos. The increased capacity at BTP will help ease the existing congestion at the Port of Santos's container terminals, which are currently operating at capacity. The accompanied remediation of the site formerly used for waste disposal will benefit the Santos community and avoid further contamination of the soil and water. The Project will also create direct and indirect employment opportunities and increase revenues for the Government of Brazil through increased economic activity and higher tax payments, custom duties, and royalty and lease payments.

This is a Category B project according to IFC’s Procedure for Environmental and Social Review of Projects because a limited number of specific environmental impacts may result, which can be avoided or mitigated by adhering to generally recognized performance standards, guidelines or design criteria.
