Project Description

The project involves the development and operation of a container terminal (the “Terminal) at an existing port facility in Nemrut Bay, Izmir (the “Project”). The Project will be implemented by TCE Ege (the “Company”) based on a long-term lease agreement for the use of the stocking areas of the port facility owned by Ege Gubre as well as a priority right of use of its piers. The Terminal is expected to have 725 meters of berth, 2 mobile harbor cranes and two ship to shore gantry cranes, a 16.5 hectare container yard, and a total capacity of around 380,000 TEUs. The Company also has the right to increase capacity to 650,000 TEUs over time.

Development Impact

The Project is expected to deliver considerable development impact by (i) contributing to the growth of trade and economy in a region that is important for the Turkish economy by expanding container handling capacity immediately in the Aegean region; (ii) reducing the costs of transportation, thereby benefitting shippers, shipping lines and consumers and (iii) increasing competition in the market and encouraging other terminal operators in Turkey to improve the efficiency of their own terminal facilities, thereby spurring increased trade in the region.

This is a Category B project according to IFC’s Environmental and Social Review Procedures. The Project will be located within the existing Port of TC EGE in Ege Gubre’s existing facilities and will not modify the Port’s current footprint. The nature of container handling and storage operations and the mechanical installation and construction activities included in the Project are such that impacts and emissions are expected to be minimal. No dredging will be required. An Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP) has been agreed to ensure performance in compliance with IFC''s Performance Standards and Guidelines. Any environmental, health and safety issues linked to the Project can be appropriately managed using accepted good engineering practices.
