Project Description

Banco de Oro (“BDO”) is one of the largest banks in the Philippines with total assets of US$17B and equity of US$1.4B as of Sept. 30, 2009. The Bank, which has a significant share of the sector’s assets and deposits, has 707 branches (53% in Metro Manila). The Bank intends to raise its core capital in order to support its growth strategy which will be driven by increased lending particularly to underserved sectors such as SME and infrastructure, as well as to provide a cushion for future shocks to the financial system and to enhance its risk management in line with Basel II prescriptions. IFC seeks to increase its support for systemically important local banks in Asian markets, such as the Philippines, as stronger equity capital footings will help to reduce systemic risk and enable these banks to play a strong role in increasing and improving financial intermediation as well as in the consolidation of the local banking sector.
