Project Description

The project is to increase the Panama Canal’s capacity and efficiency through:

- the construction of a third set of locks including two lock facilities with water-saving basins at the Atlantic and Pacific ends;
- the deepening of the Pacific and Atlantic entrances of the Panama Canal, and
- the deepening and widening of the navigational channels of the Gatun Lake, the deepening of the Culebra Cut and the elevation of Gatun Lake’s maximum operational level.

The Panama Canal, an inalienable patrimony of the Panamanian nation; since the assumption of Panamanian control on December 31, 1999 it has been administered by the Panama Canal Authority (“ACP”), an autonomous legal entity of the Republic of Panama.
