IAL is a family owned company established in 1975 by Mr. R. K. Behera, a first generation Indian entrepreneur. IAL consists of two main companies: International Auto limited and RSB Transmissions Limited. The Behera family own 75.3% of International Auto, Actis owns 12.5% and Ceat 12.2%. The Behera family own 89.5% of RSB Transmissions and the Industrial Development Bank of India 10.5%.

The total project cost is estimated at $23.5 million. The proposed IFC investment is up to $10 million Rupee equivalent in convertible preference shares.

The company is headquartered in Pune and operates six plants in Jamshedpur, Pune and Dhawar. A seventh plant is under construction in Chennai. The expansion will be take place at Jamshedpur and Pune, and at the new facility in Chennai.

The project will contribute to development in India by supporting the growth of the automotive component manufacturing industry. IFC’s presence will facilitate IAL’s expansion to become a global player. IFC will help IAL to establish corporate governance best practices and its presence will ensure the expansion is implemented in an environmentally friendly manner.

This is a category B project according to IFC’s environmental and social review procedure because a limited number of specific environmental impacts may result, which can be avoided or mitigated by adhering to generally recognized performance standards, guidelines or design criteria. The review of this project will consisted of appraising of technical, environmental, and health and safety information submitted by the company, as well as a technical appraisal and site visits by IFC staff.

The following potential environmental, health and safety impacts of the project were analyzed:

- corporate environmental, health and safety management systems;
- source and volume of water and power including fuel storage if applicable;
- storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials;
- management of waste streams including air emissions, liquid effluents and solid and hazardous waste generated in production processes;
- employee health and safety, including workplace exposures to chemicals;
- and labor relations and community impacts, if applicable.
