Project Description
The project consists of a $40 million senior loan to Banco Banex, S.A. (Banex or the Bank), an existing IFC client, to help fund the Bank’s expansion in the corporate and mortgage lending activities.
Banex is one of the largest private banks in Costa Rica, and together with Interfin (another IFC portfolio client) are the two most important private banks in the country. Costa Rica’s financial system has been historically dominated by state owned banks. However, during the 1990s some structural reforms were made, allowing private banks to compete with state owned banks. Today, private banks have gained significant presence, with approximately 50% market share of the Costa Rican market.
