Established in 1976, OEH is currently 42% owned by Sea Containers Ltd. (SCL), a market leader in passenger and freight transport and marine container leasing. OEH is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

OEH estimates an investment of $90 million over the next few years for expansion of existing properties and $50 million per year for new acquisitions. The proposed IFC investment comprises a long-term corporate loan of up to $50 million to the project companies in emerging markets.

OEH is considering a number of new investments in Asia, LAC and possibly Africa. The exact location of these investments will be determined at a later stage.

The proposed investment program would have a strong developmental impact in target countries as the related projects will bring OEH’s clientele to these countries, create jobs and contribute to foreign exchange revenues. These projects will also have strong linkages with local suppliers through purchases of produce and other on-going operating supplies, encouraging their further growth and development. Spending by international visitors will support a wide range of local economic activities, including handicrafts and souvenirs, transportation, tours, entertainment, sports and leisure activity, restaurants, etc. Local employees will receive high quality training in addition to competitive wages and will receive non-wage benefits including family health care, meals, uniforms, housing, language skills, etc. The company’s environmental and cultural protection and conservation programs maintain world class standards in difficult and fragile environments. Particularly where the impact of tourist numbers on cultural heritage and unique natural habitat sites is a concern, OEH, as a luxury tourism provider, produces a high local economic development impact, while minimizing negative environmental effects. IFC would facilitate and help improve OEH’s ability to enter and select attractive properties in target countries by ensuring the availability of financing for these small and medium size projects, which would otherwise be difficult to finance in an efficient manner.

This is a category B project according to IFC''s environmental and social review procedure. At the corporate level, IFC will require a corporate environment and social management system to ensure individual projects’ compliance with IFC policies and guidelines and implementation of best practice among OEH holdings. Each individual project will be assessed for the following social and environmental issues: site selection and land acquisition, protection of cultural property and natural habitats, environmental reviews and permits for new and reconstructed facilities, potable water, wastewater treatment, solid waste handling and disposal, use of CFCs in cooling systems, hazardous materials management, occupational health and safety, life and fire safety, and local environmental management. For each related project, an environmental review summary will be released in a relevant country for 30 days.
