Project Description

Schwarz Group (the Group or the company) is one of the largest European discount retailers. It operates two types of discount food stores in Europe:

- Lidl, limited range deep discount stores; and
- Kaufland compact discount hypermarkets.

The purpose of the project is for the company to plan a large expansion program, involving the establishment of a number of new stores and hypermarkets in Central and Eastern Europe to be implemented over the next couple of years.

Development Impact

The project will have a strong developmental impact by expanding and strengthening the discount retail format in each target country; consequently, it will provide consumers with lower prices on a wide variety of food and quality consumer goods through increased efficiencies of purchasing, logistics, technology and distribution. The project will contribute to raising the real standard of living of a large portion of the population mostly in the secondary cities and remote areas in the target countries. It will bring the convenience of discount store shopping to large portions of the population in several countries, who do not have access to this type of retail.

IFC’s role is provision of a large long-term loan to support the Group’s expansion plan, in relatively riskier secondary cities and remote areas of the selected countries, which will have substantial impact on the target countries’ retail sector and consumers as explained above.

This is a category B project according to IFC''s environmental and social review procedure. Environmental and social issues include: site acquisition, possible economic and/or physical displacement (resettlement), liquid waste treatment and disposal (including sewage collection), waste/garbage management and disposal, energy efficiency, use of appropriate refrigerants, and general worker health and safety.
