Project Description
Celtel Congo (RDC) S.p.r.l. (Celtel DRC or the company) operates a GSM (Global System for Mobiles) mobile telephone network in the Democratic Republic of Congo covering the major cities of Kinshasa and Lubumbashi, as well as surrounding areas and other regions including, Mbuyi-Mayi, Kananga, and Kolwesi. The company was granted its nation-wide mobile cellular license in December 1999, and launched its operations in Kinshasa in December 2000. The purpose of the project is to improve Celtel DRC’s existing operations by building a long distance backbone from Kinshasa to Matadi and to Congo Brazzaville and expand its network to other towns and cities, including both formerly occupied and newly liberated areas.
