Project Description

The Southern Aluminum Industry (China) Co. Ltd. (the company or SAIC), an aluminum sheet/coil and foil producer in the Fu Jian Province (southeastern China), was established in 1992. SAIC’s products are used in applications such as food and pharmaceutical packaging, condenser and fit stock, cigarettes and beverage packaging, curtain walls and kitchenware. SAIC exports 15% of its products and sells the remainder in the domestic market. SAIC currently employs 500 people. The proposed $38 million is to expand and modernize SAIC, through the installation of a second-hand aluminum hot rolling mill and ancillary new equipment. The planned hot mill, with a capacity of 60,000 tons per year, would allow SAIC to increase its sheet/coil and foil capacity from 12,000 tons to 50,000 tons for sheet/coil (including manufacture of 16,000 tons of foil stock) and from 7,200 tons to 10,000 tons for foil. The proposed project would enable the company to diversify its product mix as well as to reduce its dependency on imports.
