Project Description

In April 1999, Messrs. Omais and Abdul-Massih set up GPPI, a limited liability company incorporated in Ghana with a stated capital of US$500,000. The company is authorised to carry out the business of printing and packaging. The project is to establish a modern printing and packaging factory in Ghana at Tema to produce corrugated boxes, labels and folding boxes. The corrugated boxes is primarily targetted at exporters of agricultural produce whilst the labels and folding boxes are intended to satisfy some demand from multinationals and local companies operating in various industries in Ghana.

IFC''s role
IFC''s involvement provides a term loan to the project in a country in which term lending to small and medium size companies is limited. With IFC encouraging GPPI to adopt World Bank environmental policies and guidelines, the project will help improve environmental standards in the printing industry in Ghana.

Developmental Impact
The establishment of GPPI will introduce modern technology and training of staff which is generally lacking in the industry. Furthermore, it will enhance competition and raise the quality of finished products. The project is expected to create 95 jobs.
