Project Description
In the late 80s, the sponsor created a dairy which produces pasteurised milk packs from cows, camels and goats. Tivisky is today the first camel dairy in Africa, its whole production (mainly from cows) amounts to about 15,000 l./day. This average level can noticeably vary, firmly depending on the season. As pasteurised milk can not be kept more than a few days, the promoter wants to build a sterilised cow milk production unit. The sterilisation process will use the UHT (Ultra High Temperature) technology and requires a specific investment. Target completion date is December 2001. The total production of the whole dairy will amount to about 40,000 l./day. Tivisky will benefit from the technical and commercial assistance provided by the French major milk company SODIAAL.
The creation of a new production activity will have beneficial consequences for:
-The producer: this new range of investment will contribute to strengthening a recent small-sized company, and thus will trigger the need of additional workforce.
-The milk industry: although Mauritania is a milk consumer country, unlike other African countries, it has not developed a sufficient inner production, and has to import European sterilised milk. Sterilised milk is all the more important in Mauritania as it can be kept without cooling systems. The construction of a local dairy, which would meet hygiene and environmental standards, will support the development of this branch of the Mauritanian food-processing industry.
-Agriculture: collecting milk from small and medium-sized producers at different places in Mauritania (up to 200km from Nouakchott) will contribute to providing those populations with a regular income. Consequently, they will be led to improve the quality and size of their production.
-Gender promotion: TiviskiI S.A.R.L. is managed by a woman. Moreover, in some southern areas, the collecting system involves directly women, who own their cattle.
