The most significant expected Project-level effects are: (i) increasing access to affordable and quality healthcare services in India by supporting the expansion of one of India’s leading private multi-specialty hospital networks; and (ii) helping address healthcare infrastructure gaps through the addition of specialty hospital capacity, including in Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets where access to specialized medical care remains limited. IFC also anticipates that the investment will contribute to the competitiveness of India’s hospital sector by supporting KIMS’s high-quality tertiary care model.

The IFC investment provides financial and non-financial additionality. IFC’s financial additionality comes through IFC’s own account equity investment, which will provide long-term capital to support KIMS’s capital raise and multi-year expansion plan. IFC’s participation is expected to support KIMS’s continued expansion of affordable, quality healthcare services in India, including in underserved markets. IFC will also seek to support KIMS in strengthening systems and practices appropriate for a growing, multi-state hospital platform, including in areas such as healthcare quality, governance, and environmental and social practices. IFC’s engagement is also expected to support continued strengthening of KIMS’s E&S systems, including life and fire safety and workforce management, in line with IFC Performance Standards and international good practice.

This is a Category B project according to IFC's Policy on Environment and Social Sustainability (2012). Based on information reviewed by IFC, the proposed project will have limited adverse E&S impacts that are few, site specific, largely reversible and readily addressed through existing mitigation measures and good international industry practices (GIIP). Key E&S issues and risks associated with the Project include: 1) the company's management and monitoring systems to assess and manage E&S risks and impacts from its operations including brownfield acquisition, and greenfield developments; 2) consistent management of labor and working conditions including occupational health and safety (OHS) policies and practices, employee accommodation standards, policies and practices related to gender based violence & harassment (GBVH) among workforce and workers engaged by 3rd parties; 3) resource efficiency measures and pollution prevention including biomedical waste management; and 4) community health, safety and security risks including life and fire safety, patient grievance redressal mechanism, community GBVH and child protection (CP) risks, and stakeholder engagement.
