Project Description

The proposed investment comprises an International Finance Corporation (IFC) A-loan of up to US$60 million in INR equivalent, to Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (“GVMC”), an urban local body in the state of Andhra Pradesh. GVMC is responsible for the civic infrastructure and administration of the city of Visakhapatnam. The proposed investment would finance the development of Madhurawada Sewerage System in the northern part of the city as it is one of the fastest growing executive capital area in the city. The project involves the development of sewage collection network, sewage pumping stations, lift stations, and sewage treatment plant. The benefits of the proposed project are increased sustainability of sanitation services, improved environmental outcomes, mitigation of greenhouse gases, and cost efficiency.

Associated Advisory Engagement

IFC has provided value-added advisory services to GVMC on select developmental issues. Technical support was provided by IFC through its Utilities for Climate (U4C) and Advanced Practices for Environmental Excellence in Cities (APEX) platforms. IFC provided best-practice inputs for the Madhurawada Sewerage System project including the assessment of technology options for the wastewater treatment plant, particularly considering the influent and effluents quality, phasing of the project, anaerobic digestion, and EPC and O&M arrangements. The APEX Tool is used to identify and prioritize measures based on expected impact (in reduction of greenhouse gases) and cost of municipal projects – designed to improve the city’s decision-making processes on energy, transport, water and waste systems.  A Green City Action Plan was also prepared for the city.
