Project Description

The Project consists of an investment by IFC in the form of an A loan of up to US$60 million equivalent in PT Gunung Rajapaksi Tbk (GRP or the Company). GRP is a leading steel producer in Indonesia involved in the production of crude steel from EAF to mainstream and downstream flat steel products. The Company primarily serves the growing domestic demand for steel in Indonesia. The Project will fund GRP’s capital expenditure to expand its upstream, middlestream and downstream capacity to produce coated steel, along with investments to increase energy efficiency. The climate component of the Project is assessed as 92 percent of the total Project cost, and the Project is aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement.

Associated Advisory Engagement

IFC’s advisory services will help GRP in developing and implementing its decarbonization strategy, with a focus on improving the Company’s financial and environmental sustainability performance. This includes assessing measures to improve energy efficiency at GRP’s EAF plant and identifying revamp opportunities. These efforts are expected to directly reduce GHG emissions and lower operating costs through decreased electricity consumption per ton of steel produced. Additionally, IFC’s advisory team will work with GRP to strengthen the business case for low-carbon steel, including exploring new high-value steel products compatible with EAF production. The objective is to displace the currently imported semi-finished steel products, primarily from countries in Asia, that are using BF technology with GRP’s lower carbon intensity steel production from EAF. Furthermore, IFC together with GRP will build the future investment pipeline required to implement the advisory program’s recommendations.
