Blended Finance
The proposed IFC investment is an A-loan of up to US$8.5 million to Pharmakina S.A. (“Pharmakina” or “the Company”), one of the world’s principal manufacturers of quinine (the active agent in anti-malaria drugs), with its operations based in Bukavu, the Eastern region of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The funds will be used to (i) modernize and upgrade existing processing facilities, (ii) expand production capacity, (iii) increase working capital, and (iv) refinance the Company’s existing bank loan.
IFC’s advisory is expected to start at the same time as the investment service to support (i) increasing the local market share, (ii) better controlling raw materials sourcing, and (iii) improving the yield of smallholder cinchona farmers along its supply chain.
