M-KOPA Holdings Limited (the “Company” or “M-KOPA”) improves financial inclusion for millions of Africans who struggle to access credit and traditional financial services. Their solutions provide underbanked customers with access to finance, enabling them to acquire life-improving productive assets such as high-quality smartphones, electric motorbikes, and digital financial services including health insurance. Since its inception in 2011, M-KOPA has provided over USD1 billion in credit to over four million customers across Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa.  M-KOPA’s primary shareholders are composed of Generation Investment Management, British International Investment, Lightrock and Sumitomo.

At the time of commitment, the total funding to M-KOPA was up to US$180 million and IFC’s proposed investment is comprised of a senior secured loan of up to US$50 million (in USD or KES equivalent) to M-KOPA Kenya Limited and a senior secured loan of up to US$15 million (in UGX equivalent) to M-KOPA Uganda Limited.

At the time of commitment, the core mobilization for this project was US $115 million.

 M-KOPA Kenya Limited and M-KOPA Uganda Limited are based in Kenya and Uganda respectively and proceeds will be utilized to scale operations in each of these countries.

This is a Category B project according to IFC's Environmental and Social Sustainability Policy (2012). Key E&S risks and impacts associated with the project include: (a) company’s capability to develop and implement a management systems, its capacity and staffing for managing its operations in line with IFC Performance Standards (PSs) requirements; (b) assurance of fair, safe and healthy working conditions in line with national and IFC PS2 requirements; (c) management of disposal of phones and solar equipment(after use), as applicable and any environmental impacts associated with storage facilities in line with IFC PSs and WBG Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines; (d) supply chain risks for sourcing of phones and solar equipment, (e) community health and safety including road safety management for distribution. M-KOPA successfully implemented an ESAP plan as of end of 31st December 2023 to address E&S risks highlighted above.
