IFC is considering a US$12 million loan in local currency to the Municipality of San Jose (the “municipality” or “MSJ”) to finance (i) the upgrade of three urban corridors with a total of 2.7 kilometers across the city: Transversal 24 (T24), Calle 33 and Calle 78, and (ii) rehabilitation and expansion of the rainwater drainage system of the municipality with a total of approximately 3.8 kilometers in the areas where flood frequently occurs.
IFC will accompany the proposed investment by an advisory support program to help implement the project according to international best practice and build the Municipality’s capacity, as well as to help the Municipality to advance new priority investment projects. To date, IFC has initiate three advisory engagement with the municipality, as follows:
(i) Capacity building to promote green building standards: The advisory support is focused on strengthening the municipality’s in-house capacities to implement basic mechanisms that promote green building standards (including EDGE), reinforcing the importance of promoting sustainable construction and the benefits it generates.
(ii) Knowledge sharing of international best practice for cities: The municipality participated in Urban 20 summit to discuss ways to help cites achieve urban sustainability, inclusion and economic growth.
(iii) Assessment of an integrated transportation system: The San Jose tramway was proposed by the MSJ as a solution to the current traffic congestion in the city, however the project requires an integrated demand study to assess its attractiveness for a public-private partnership. Therefore, IFC together with WB is supporting the preparation of an integrated demand analysis for the transportation system in the metropolitan area of San Jose with a focus in the San Jose tramway aligned with other initiatives at the national level.
