Project Description

Founded and headquartered in Guangdong since 1998, Guangdong Haid Group Co., Ltd (“Haid”) is one of China’s leading animal and aqua feed producers, with sales of US$4 billion and a market capitalization of US$3.7 billion. The Project is to expand Haid’s overseas aqua feed operations in the developing countries.

Development Impact

(i) Spur Regional Economic Growth through a South-South Investment: Haid's cross-border investments in Vietnam, India and potentially other emerging markets will help to stimulate regional integration, job creation, and economic development through upstream and downstream linkages. (ii) Improve Farmer Incomes: Aqua feed and fingerlings supplied by Haid to independent shrimp and fish farmers have been shown to generate better feed conversion ratios than those from other suppliers. The use of these inputs and the accompanying technical services from Haid will enhance the supply chain efficiencies and lower inputs costs for farmers, thus contributing to improved farmer incomes. (iii) Support Climate Change Agenda: The Project will also contribute to the development of Climate Smart Agriculture and climate change adaptation through better efficiencies, reduced waste, and lower fish and shrimp mortality. These all jointly result in a smaller environmental footprint of aquaculture and higher water quality in the ponds, which is especially relevant in markets experiencing a strain on the environment. (iv) Food Safety: Haid will adopt best food safety practices in the new markets, in line with its current operations that are subject to several Quality Assurance systems (such as ISO22000, BAP, Global GAP and HACCP). These certifications not only mitigate risks but give the Company a competitive advantage.

(i) Long Term Financing: IFC is providing a long-term loan that is not readily available in the markets into which Haid is expanding. With a tenor of 7 years, this will be the longest term financing obtained by Haid so far. (ii) Springboard to Emerging Markets: Haid will leverage IFC's rich investment experience and country presence in new markets to mitigate its entry risk.

E&S Category Rationale / Risks and Mitigation

The Project has limited potential adverse E&S impacts. The main E&S risks and issues include the management of solid and liquid wastes and air emissions; resource efficiency; assurance of fair, safe and healthy working conditions for all workers during construction and operations; and sustainable management of living natural resources related to the supply chain of fish and shrimp feed. All these risks can be avoided or mitigated by adhering to generally recognized performance standards, guidelines, or design criteria. As such, this project is classified as a Category B project per IFC’s Policy on Environmental and Social Sustainability.
