Asyaport is a 70%-30% joint venture between Global Terminal Limited (“GTL”) and the Turkish Soyuer family.  GTL is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Terminal Investment Limited S.a.r.l (“TIL”). TIL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Terminal Investment Limited Holding (“TILH” and the “Sponsor”).

TILH was established in 2000 and is domiciled in Luxembourg since 2016. TILH is owned by Terminal Holding Limited S.a.r.l. (“THL”) (57.3%), Global Infrastructure Partners (32.7%), and GIC Private Limited (10%). THL is fully owned by Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A., domiciled in Switzerland, which is fully owned by Mediterranean Shipping Company Holding S.A, also domiciled in Switzerland.

TILH is the 6th largest and one of the most geographically-diverse container-terminal-operating investors in the world, handling 31.4 million container moves (37.7 million TEUs) in 2018. TILH owns material equity interests in 38 operating and 2 greenfield terminals with the average remining life of 28 years, which are strategically located in key ports on major shipping routes in 26 countries across 5 continents. TILH is present in Turkey via 3 ports, Asyaport, Marport and Assan port, with a total installed capacity of 3.9 million TEUs.                                                  

The Project is estimated to cost US$24 million. IFC is expected to provide up to US$12 million in senior debt financing to the Company for IFC’s own account.

The Project is located on the Marmara Sea, near the city of Barbaros, Tekirdag Province, Turkey. It is a deep-water site and is strategically located to serve as a transshipment hub for containers destined to the Black Sea via the Bosphorus Strait.

 Not applicable to the Project (non-extractive sector). 

 In accordance with IFC’s Policy on Social and Environmental Sustainability, the project is assigned Category B because a limited number of specific E&S impacts may result, which can be avoided or mitigated by adhering to generally recognized performance standards, guidelines or design criteria. Key E&S issue and risks associated with the project include: (i) the company’s operational E&S management and monitoring systems and capacity; (ii) management of labor and working conditions, and operational health and safety (OHS) procedures including contractor workforce; (iii) terminal traffic management; (iv) the impact of the project operations on the nearby communities’ health, safety and security.
