Project Name JORDAN: Amman Marriott/AIHC

1. This project involves the renovation and expansion of the Amman Marriott. The plans involve refurbishment of all 294 rooms, addition of conference and banquet facilities, movie theaters, retail space and underground parking.
2. This is a category B project according to IFC’s environmental review procedure because specific impacts may result which can be avoided or mitigated by adhering to generally recognized performance standards, guidelines or design criteria. The review of the project consisted of appraising technical and environmental information submitted by the project sponsor, and the technical appraisal and site review completed by IFC’s Technical and Environment staff. The following potential environmental, health and safety impacts of the project were analyzed:
· sewage treatment and disposal;
· liquid and solid waste disposal;
· water and power supply;
· recovery of dry cleaning solvents;
· CFCs;
· employee safety training and emergency response; and
· fire protection measures.
The information provided by AIHC about how each of these potential impacts will be addressed in the development of the proposed project is summarized in the paragraphs that follow.
3. The hotels sewage and liquid waste are discharged to the Zerka municipal sewage system. This facility will treat waste from all point sources within the hotel; including sewage, gray water from kitchens and laundry. The facility has the capacity to treat the hotel’s effluent and will comply with World Bank guidelines for liquid effluents.
4. Solid waste from the hotel will be collected and disposed of by the municipality at designated sites. AIHC will implement a recycling program throughout the hotel.
5. Water for the hotel’s operations will be supplied by the national water authority. Power supply will be provided by the national grid.
6. Dry cleaning solvents are recovered by the solvent supplier. The sponsor has committed that all cold storage and central cooling system will be CFC-free.
7. AIHC will provide all employees with the necessary training including equipment handling, proper work procedures, fire safety, and emergency preparedness.
8. AIHC has committed to conduct, as condition of first disbursement of IFC’s loan, an independent fire safety audit of all existing structures and proposed renovations and new structures. This audit will identify necessary corrective action which the sponsor will fully implement.
9. Based on its review of available information regarding potential environmental impacts and proposed mitigation measures, IFC concludes that AIHC proposed project will meet World Bank environmental, health and safety policies and guidelines and host country requirements.
10. IFC will monitor ongoing compliance with World Bank environmental, health and safety policies and guidelines during the lifetime of the project by evaluating reports submitted annually to IFC by AIHC and by conducting periodic supervision.
