Project Name AEF- GAMBIA: Kerr Kande Farm II (KKF II)

1. This project involves the modernization of existing poultry houses and building of new ones, to expand capacity from 2 million eggs per annum to 5 million. It is sponsored by Mr. Momodou Jagne who has owned and managed KKF II since he established the company in 1980. Total project cost is estimated at US$0.62 million of which AEF has been approached to provide a loan of US$0.25million.
2. This is a category B project according to IFC’s environmental review procedure because specific impacts may result which can be avoided or mitigated by adhering to generally recognized performance standards, guidelines or design criteria. The review of this project consisted of the appraisal of technical and environmental information submitted by the project sponsor and completed by IFC’s Environment Department staff. The key environmental, health and safety issues considered in this project include:
· power and water supply and use;
· solid and liquid waste disposal;
· effluent treatment (including sewage);
· CFC-free cold storage;
· land use and site conditions;
· plant hygiene and housekeeping
· employee exposure to dust and heat;
· employee safety and training; and
· fire prevention.
The sponsor has presented plans to address these issues and demonstrate that the proposed project will comply with applicable governmental and World Bank requirements. The information provided about how these potential impacts are addressed in the development of the project is summarized in the paragraphs that follow.
3. The farm obtains its water and power supply from the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC). Water supply for the birds is done manually.
4. The solid waste generated at the farm is a combination of wood shavings mixed with chicken droppings. This solid waste is collected, bagged and sold to horticulturist and fruit tree farmers for their use as fertilizers. Soakaway pits will be installed to contain any liquid effluents.
5. The farm is CFC-free as there is no refrigeration facilities. The farm does not have any heavy machinery or equipment that can produce loud noises or emit air pollutants.
6. The area to be occupied by the proposed additional six poultry houses is an all agricultural area used for fruit and vegetables gardening. No environmentally sensitive areas are involved.
7. Personnel working with the daily activities of feeding, cleaning, changing water and collecting eggs, spend approximately 20 minutes at a time in the poultry house, and eggs are collected every two hours during the day. Employees will be provided with special uniforms including face masks. As part of their occupational health and safety, the sponsor has provisions for first aid attention on site. A non-smoking policy is observed through out the farm to avoid fires, and employees are trained in good housekeeping practices. Fire extinguishers will be installed throughout the farm.
8. IFC will ensure ongoing compliance with World Bank environmental, health and safety policies and guidelines during the life of the project by evaluating monitoring reports submitted annually to IFC by KKF and by conducting periodic supervisions.
9. Based on its review of available information regarding potential environmental impacts and proposed mitigation measures, IFC concludes that the proposed project is being designed to meet Government of The Gambia requirements, and World Bank policies, and environmental, health and safety guidelines.
