Project Description

The proposed investment consists of up to US$ 20 million senior loan to Farmaenlace (the Company), a leading pharma retailer company in Ecuador operating over 1,200 pharmacies (600 franchises) targeting mainly middle and low-middle-income population across the country. The proposed IFC Loan will finance the Company’s expansion strategy as follows: (i) expansion of pharmacy network (about 200 new pharmacies), (ii) construction of a storage and distribution facility, EDGE certified; and (iii) refinancing of short-term lines (together, the “Project”).

The Company has storage and distribution facilities (distribution centers) at La Luz and Llano Grande and the activities conducted by the Company are related to logistic and do not include manufacturing activities.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

 IFC’s environmental and social (E&S) review of the proposed investment included a field appraisal in April 2023, including: (i) meetings with the company's management team, staff in charge of occupational and health and safety (OHS), chief of operations, project manager, purchasing manager, among others; (ii) review of E&S policies and manual of procedures, organizational capacity of Farmaenlace for both operations and potential expansion/new projects, and relevant policies and procedures regarding contractor’s management; labor and working conditions; OHS, including life and fire safety (LFS); stakeholder engagement; and security management, in addition to permits and licenses, and monitoring process.
