Project Description

Sanasa (www.sanasa.com.br) is the municipality-owned water and sanitation company of Campinas in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The proposed IFC investment will be used to finance eligible subprojects with limited environmental and social (E&S) impacts located in urban and peri-urban areas, as those described below (the Project).

I. Water Supply subprojects aimed to improve water security, increase the reliability of local water systems and eliminate deficiencies:

- Water storage facilities: construction of 14 water storage facilities, with a total volume of 48,200 m³, increasing by 34% the existing storage capacity;

- Water distribution system: construction of 3 water distribution networks in the neighborhoods of Monte Belo, Bananal and Gargantilha, including two water pumping stations, two water storage facilities (total volume of 400 m³) and a total of 41 km of water distribution network, benefiting 8,200 people;

II. Sewage Collection and Treatment subprojects aimed at expanding sewage collection and treatment capacity:

- Sewage collection: construction of the Campos Elíseos trunk collector, with 5,2 km of linear network, benefiting 8,500 people;

- Waste Water Treatment Plan (WWTP) expansion: the treatment capacity expansion of two wastewater treatment plants - WWTP Nova América and WWTP Piçarrão;

- WWTP reversion: redirect sewage from WWTP Santa Mônica (to be decommissioned) to WWTP Boa Vista, which will require the construction of a sewage pumping station and 2,2km of linear network, benefiting 35,000 people.

III. Reuse Water Production subproject aimed to improve the treatment, revitalize the receptor water body, eliminate impacts on affected communities related to air pollution and increase the offer of reuse water:

- WWTP Anhumas retrofit to modernize sewage treatment technology by changing the traditional Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) to activated sludge treatment combined with membranes (ultrafiltration).

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

IFC’s due diligence consisted of the review of E&S information and in-person meetings with Sanasa’s management and E&S staff in November 2022. The review was aimed at assessing the company’s corporate E&S management system (ESMS) and organizational capacity and at reviewing E&S risks and impacts associated with the eligible subprojects to be financed by IFC.

IFC E&S review was also supported by site visits in November 2022 to a sample of four operating facilities to assess on-the-ground conditions and implementation of the company’s ESMS.
