Project Description

This ESRS is prepared and distributed in advance of CLN’s Board of Directors’ consideration of the proposed transaction. This document should not be construed as presuming the outcome of CLN’s Board of Directors’ decision and is not in any way a commitment by CLN.

The proposed project is aiming to finance MA Automotive Tools and Dies (Pty) Ltd (“MA Automotive” or the “company”) operations in South Africa. MA Automotive produces body parts for car manufacturers and the production consists of high quality operations of steel/aluminum blanks being pressed into appropriate forms and shapes, cutting and removal of excess materials, followed by assembling of selected parts of car bodies by welding or gluing (primarily carried out by robotics, and placing of these interim products in racks ready for usage by car manufacturers. The CLN facilities have no galvanizing and only minimal water based painting operations and therefore no hazardous material discharges or emissions occur.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

IFC’s environmental and social review of the project included a visit to the Rosslyn operation of MA Automotive near Pretoria, where the new BMW X3 aluminum body part line has been installed and a visit to the Berlin operations near East London, where MA Automotive is operating both an elderly steel based line production and a fairly new aluminum based line for Mercedes parts.  It is expected that the latter will be expended to more than double the current capacity in the nearby future, all within the current plant structures. Both visits included office discussions of operational data and walk though of Plants. Interviews were also held with the Plant Managers, the Human Resources Manager and the HSE Manager. Supplementary information including copies of certification and monitoring data, where also received and reviewed.
