Project Description

Hikma Pharmaceuticals PLC (‘Hikma’, ‘the company’ or together with its subsidiaries ‘the Group’) is a generic pharmaceutical company incorporated in United Kingdom (UK) and listed on the London Stock Exchange. While the Group was founded in Jordan in 1978, Hikma has expanded its footprint with successful operations across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, the United States (US) and Europe. The company has 29 manufacturing facilities in 11 countries of which facilities in 5 countries have received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Hikma’s main business lines include branded, injectable and generic pharmaceuticals. Hikma is a long-standing IFC client since 1987 whereby support was primarily provided to the company’s investments in the MENA region including financing of acquisition in Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco and Egypt, allied to expansion of existing facilities.

The current investment involves; i) an A Loan of up to $150 million; and ii) syndicated parallel loans of an amount to be determined to the company for general purposes of the company and members of its Group in the MENA region and other developing countries in which Hikma operates.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

The scope of this ESRS and the Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP) extends to the Company’s operations in the MENA region and the World Bank countries of operation.  IFC’s review of the project included site visits in April 2016 to Hikma’s headquarters in Jordan, two plants in Amman and two recently acquired subsidiaries in Egypt. The facilities selected for review were those the company has operated for the longest, or recently acquired; the latter reasoning being so as to observe how the Group adapts environmental and social management at such facilities to their own approach. In addition, IFC also used information provided by the Group in its Annual Monitoring Reports (AMRs) on environmental and social performance as well as the routine updates submitted on the ESAP for the IFC investments so as to demonstrate compliance with the at approval requirements for the related projects.

IFC also reviewed detailed information on Hikma’s systems and procedures for managing environmental, labor, health and safety, and human resource management, and met with corporate and regional management and staff to discuss the company’s expansion program.

Based on IFC’s ongoing review, the company’s environmental and social performance associated with IFC’s current investment is considered to be satisfactory.
