Project Description

The project involves a proposed $4.5 million loan by IFC to finance expansion activity and potential acquisitions by Goodlife, a company established by Africa Chemist & Beauty Care Inc. (“ACBC”) to be the leading branded pharmacy chain in East Africa. Goodlife presently consists of 5 recently acquired pharmacy stores operating under the brand name Mimosa in multiple locations in Kenya. Over the next 5 years, Goodlife aims to rebrand these stores and acquire and establish new stores to create the leading branded pharmacy chain in East Africa.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

The review of this project consisted of a visit by IFC staff to the project site, to meet with and interview management of Goodlife Pharmacy Limited (“Goodlife”) and to have a first-hand review of operational activities. IFC staff also appraised Goodlife’s drug disposal policies, human resources policies and procedures, and pharmaceutical policies and procedures.

IFC’s appraisal considered environmental and social (E&S) management plans for the project and gaps, if any, between these plans and IFC requirements. Where necessary, corrective measures intended to close these gaps within a reasonable period of time are summarized in the paragraphs that follow. Through implementation of these actions, the project is expected to be designed and operated in accordance with Performance Standards objectives.
