Project Description

Marina Market was created in November 1989. As of today, the company operates 4 supermarkets with a warehouse facility in Burkina Faso (Marina Market Burkina Faso), a supermarket and retail/office building in Ghana (Marina Market Ghana), and a supermarket in Niger (Marina Market Niger).

In 2007, IFC considered an investment to support Marina Market’s growth in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Niger, and disclosed an ESRS describing the project. This ESRS may be found at this link:

IFC invested to support Marina Market in Ghana and Niger, while the proposed investment in Marina Market Burkina Faso to support the modernization and expansion of Marina Market’s retailing and warehousing facilities in Burkina Faso was delayed. In the intervening period, IFC has supervised Marina Market’s operations in the three countries. This ESRS covers the proposed investment in Burkina Faso.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

IFC’s environmental and social (E&S) review of the proposed investment included the following:

- Meetings with Marina Market’s General Manager, Store Manager, and Human Resources (HR) Manager in September 2012. Phone interview with Marina Market’s General Manager in November 2013;
- Visit of retailing and warehousing facilities in Burkina Faso in September 2012;
- Review of technical documents provided by Marina Market including the Social and Environmental Policy, the Human Resources (HR) Policy and Procedures, the list of fire prevention equipment, Bureau Veritas Life and Fire Safety Audit Report and Corrective Action Plan (dated February 2013).

IFC’s appraisal considered environmental and social management plans for the Project and gaps, if any between these plans and IFC requirements. Where necessary, corrective measures, intended to close these gaps within a reasonable period of time, are summarized in the paragraphs that follow and in the agreed Environmental and Social Action Plan (ESAP) disclosed in this review summary. Through implementation of these management plans and the ESAP, the Project is expected to be designed and operated in accordance with IFC’s Performance Standards (PSs) objectives.
