Project Description

Probiotech Industries Private Limited (“PBIL” or the “Company”), incorporated in 2001, is one of the first organised sector poultry feed manufacturers in Nepal. PBIL has the latest pelletizing plant inclusive of auto batching which has been supplied by Van Aarsen, a leading manufacturer of feed milling equipment. Currently, key products are animal feed, de-oiled cake and crude edible oil. PBIL’s product “Shakti” is the first brand to be certified to the Nepal Standard (NS-11) and NS Quality Award. “Shakti” is also the largest selling animal feed brand in Nepal. The Company is now undertaking capital expenditure for forward integration into the production of soya flour and nuggets and refined edible oil. PBIL is also planning to refinance part of its short term debt through long term sources.

The project under consideration is an equity investment by IFC in PBIL with the financing to be utilized by the Company for its expansion into soya flour and nuggets; edible oil refining for producing soybean and rice bran oil; and reducing working capital debt.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

IFC’s review of this proposed investment consisted of appraising technical, environmental, health and safety (EHS) and social related information submitted by Probiotech Industries Ltd. (“PBIL” or the “Company”) including: business plans, corporate policies, human resources related procedures and documents; organizational charts; regulatory permits etc.

The appraisal included a site visit to PBIL’s manufacturing facility in Birgunj, Nepal (180 km from Kathmandu), review of documents related to the expansion plans, environmental compliance, HR policies and procedures, labor relations; and discussions with PBIL’s senior management (including Managing Director, Deputy CEO, Deputy GM-Works and Deputy GM – Factory HR and Administration).
