Project Description

Jiangxi TianRen Ecology Co., Ltd (“TianRen” or the “Company”) is a leading biopesticides producer in China, located in the south of Jiangxi Province. As the industry pioneer and industry standard initiator for fungal pesticides in China, TianRen has been engaging in the research and development, production, sales and technical service for a variety of fungal pesticides products since 2002. Fungal pesticides are fungus-based biopesticides, contributing about 38% of total biopesticides output in China. As of today, TianRen has established one of the largest production bases for fungal pesticides, and one of the top five entomogenous fungi storage centers globally.

Beauveria bassiana (“Bb”) and Metarhizium anisopliae (“Ma”) are the major products of TianRen. Both are the most widely applied fungal pesticides, accounting for about 60% fungal pesticide market worldwide and effectively controlling over 700 insects including whitefly, aphids, thrips, psyllids, weevils, and mealybugs amongst others. TianRen is the first enterprise in China to realize the industrialization of fungal pesticides with an annual capacity of 1,800 tons Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API). Currently TianRen is working to expand its fungal pesticides capacity by another 1,800 tons per annum (“tpa”), improve its financial structure and purchase four aircrafts with the intention of building up a larger supply base and strengthen its service capacity both in the air and on the land during 2012 – 2014 (the “project”). Management and operation of the aircraft will be contracted to an aviation service company, which will comply with the local aviation regulatory requirements for licenses, maintenance requirements, operations and the like. The main biopestide manufacturing process is fermentation. After the raw agricultural materials are disinfected by steam, specified fungi seeds are added for fermentation. After fermentation, the products go through drying, crushing and packing processes.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

The review of this project consisted of appraising technical, environmental, health, safety, and social information submitted by the project sponsor, and undertaking a field visit in December 2012. The environmental and social (“E&S”) appraisal team visited the project site in Ji’an, Jiangxi Province, China. The E&S team held meetings with the Company’s management team, and also interviewed employees.
