Project Description

Compañia Agropecuaria Copeval S.A. (“Copeval” or the “Company”) is Chile’s leading agricultural input distributor, reaching more than 30,000 farmers. Copeval offers a “one-stop shop” to farmers, providing agrochemicals, fertilizers, seeds, agricultural machinery, irrigation equipment, intermediation and logistics services, technical assistance and training. Copeval has 27 distribution branches across the country, 7 storage plants with 300,000 tons capacity; out of those storage plants, two have the capability of producing animal feed and one to produce wheat flour intermediaries for human consumption. Copeval has its own fleet to distribute products, diesel and to collect the grains from the farmers. Copeval provides, as separate business line, services such as training and technical assistance to farmers.

The proposed loan will help the Company grow through a more sustainable working capital for the opening of new branches, expanding further grain storage and drying capacity; and to replace short term debt with long term debt.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

IFC’s environmental and social (E&S) appraisal of the project encompassed site visits to the following facilities in Chile: Copeval’s headquarters in San Fernando; the distribution centers in San Fernando and Curico; the distribution branches of San Fernando, Curico and Nancagua; and the grain storage /processing plants in Nancagua and Curico. Site visits were supported by a review of E&S documents provided by Copeval, which included written replies to an E&S questionnaire submitted by IFC; copies of internal environmental policies, plans and procedures, copies of local permits and licenses for its operations; occupational health and safety (OHS) as well as environmental monitoring records; and Human Resources (HR) policies and procedures. Meetings were held with Copeval’s operations manager and his team responsible for quality, environmental and OHS aspects of the operations; with Copeval’s human resources manager; with the agribusiness manager, responsible for grain storage /processing plants; and with the coordinator of the phyto-sanitary division.
