Project Description

Hummingbird Resources PLC is an AIM-listed mining company with exploration licenses in Liberia covering some 7,000 square kilometres. Dugbe F/Tuzon gold project is Hummingbird’s main asset. The Dugbe project site is located in Sinoe County in the southeast of Liberia, inland of the port of Greenville. The project area is rainforest degraded by slash-and-burn subsistence agriculture, bush-meat hunting, selective logging, artisanal gold mining and recent gold exploration activities. There are several small villages in the area, many associated with active artisanal mining.

The Dugbe F/Tuzon project has identified an inferred/indicated mineral resource and is currently continuing early exploration work. Dugbe exploration camp has been established on the west bank of the Jubo River and is the main centre of field operations. It houses about 80 staff and includes workshops for vehicle maintenance, woodwork, etc., a basic clinic, communications equipment and the core shed. Exploration drilling around this area has identified gold deposits hosted in Birimian rocks typical of this region of West Africa.

A number of other smaller licenses are owned by Hummingbird, such as Kana Hills, Ba, Zia, Jubabli, Nemo Creek and Tiehnpo, with exploration work limited to stream sediment sampling, soil sampling and preparation for trenching and future drilling.

IFC investment will finance continuing early exploration work at Dugbe to be undertaken prior to pre-feasibility study of potential future mine development.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

IFC’s review of the project consisted of an appraisal visit to Hummingbird Resources PLC (“Hummingbird” or “the Company”) prospects in Dugbe in southern Liberia. The appraisal reviewed environmental, health, safety, and social information submitted by the Company and identified their plans and commitments for the future development of the prospect. The IFC team held discussions with Hummingbird’s management and technical staff, reviewed environmental health and safety documents, visited the drill sites, and conducted a meeting with the local community members in the village of Tuzon. The team also held a meeting with the Liberian Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy in Monrovia.
