Project Description

SRF Limited (“SRF” or the “Sponsor”), is a large company with three main businesses: 1) Technical Textiles (Nylon and polyester tire cord fabric, belting coated and laminated fabrics); 2) Chemicals (Refrigerant gases, Chloromethanes, fluorospecialities); and 3) Packaging Films, is setting up a greenfield plant, SRF Flexipak (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd (hereafter referred to as SRF Flexipak, in eThekwini, South Africa to manufacture 26,000 ton per annum (TPA) bi-axially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) with a 5,700 TPA metallizer. SRF Flexipak will import or purchase polypropylene chips locally and extrude/stretch polypropylene to manufacture BOPP film. The total investment is about US$67 million. The Sponsor has requested IFC to provide a loan of US$40 million to fund the Project.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

The review of this project consisted of appraising technical, environmental, health, safety, and social information submitted by the project sponsor, and undertaking a field visit in March 2012. IFC reviewed the proposed production processes and environmental and social impact assessment. The environmental and social (E&S) appraisal team visited the proposed project site located in eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, Cato Ridge, KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa. The E&S team also held meetings with the company’s E&S advisor and management teams.
