Project Description

The Project will involve an equity investment into HMH to assist with its corporate needs, including the following investments: (i) increase its softwood timber processing capacity and efficiency in South Africa, (ii) expansion of its European Union (EU) fruit marketing and distribution, and (iii) expansion of its avocado orchards in South Africa and Latin America to achieve consistent year round supply of 50% of products marketed in the EU markets. In the medium term, HMH intends to expand into other avocado markets, including Latin America. The project will enable the HMH to implement its strategy to further develop its forward integration in the supply chain in South Africa, pursue global trading opportunities in wood products, and ensure it increases its ownership / control of sustainable commercial plantations.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

IFC’s review of the Baobab project ( the Project”) consisted of a three weeks appraisal visit conducted in August 2012 to assess the Company (Hans Merensky, HMH) operations, review environmental, occupational health and safety, and social information submitted by the Company and understand their policy, plans and commitments for the future development of the Project.
The forests operations and milling are located in Limpopo, Kwa-Zulu (Singisi and Weza), Eastem Cape (Langeni), and Mpumalanga provinces in South Africa. The avocado orchards and processing facilities are located in Limpopo, Everdon, Adelaide and Paarl in South Africa, as well as in Huanta, Peru’s Ayacucho Province. Under Hans Merensky Holding, there are two main subsidiaries that run its forests operations and processing (Merensky) and its avocado production and processing (Westfalia). A sample of their forests operations, wood milling facilities avocado orchards and processing plants, workers’ accommodations, field camps, and local offices were visited.
Meetings were held with local business units’ managers, forest managers, avocado’s farms managers, environmental staff and social/community liaison. This provided an overview of Hans Merensky Holding’ E&S performance and existing stakeholder engagement practices. Meetings were also held with the CEO and senior management to better understand the Company’s commitment and approach to key environmental and social aspects.
