Project Description

Med Life SA (“MedLife” or the “Company”) is a leading player in the Romanian private health care market. It provides integrated medical services for corporate clients and individuals and operates a 120-bed private hospital in Romania (Life Memorial Hospital), 9 hyperclinics (large clinics providing an extensive range of high quality clinical services), 7 laboratories, 4 medical centers, and a pharmaceutical retail chain. MedLife also has one of the largest subscriber base in the Romanian corporate market. MedLife is an existing IFC client and plans to invest up to approximately EUR 52 million in 2011-2015 to expand operations in Romania: (i) build new hospitals and hyperclinics in Bucharest and cities across Romania; (ii) develop laboratories; and (iii) target acquisitions of smaller outpatient clinics, laboratories and hospitals. IFC made its first project with MedLife in 2006 and has considered this third investment given MedLife’s commitment and good performance in social and environmental sustainability.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

IFC’s review of this project consisted of reviewing Environmental and Social’s Annual Monitoring Reports from its previous investments from IFC, evaluating additional documentation provided by Medlife, interviews with the senior management and technical team including quality, environment, occupational health and safety systems standardization, infection control, human resources, engineering and administrative management and architectural bureau commissioned for new developments. Site visits were performed to MedLife Memorial Hospital and MedLab laboratory in Grivita and to two operational hyperclinics as well as to the construction sites of current expansions in Bucharest, including an orthopedic and a pediatric hospital with a capacity of 50 beds and 120 beds respectively).
