Project Description

Established in 1955 by Mr. Mehmet Melih Sipahioglu, Tamek Gida ve Konsantre Sanayii ve Ticaret A.S. (Tamek or the Company) concentrates on two main areas: (i) fruit juice and concentrates; and (ii) processed food, including tomato and pepper pastes, ketchup, mayonnaise, canned and stewed products, ready dishes, pickles, jams and marmalades. The proposed corporate loan will be utilized for refinancing part of the Company’s existing short-term debt, working capital requirements and additional/maintenance capital expenditures (collectively the “Project”)

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

The IFC’s appraisal of this project included the following: Site visits to Tamek Headquarters in Besiktas-Istanbul, contracted vegetable fields in Salihli, Tamek plants in Kiziksa-Balikesir, Karacabey-Bursa and Salihli-Manisa. Meetings were held with Supply Chain Director, Plant Production Managers, Operation Managers, Quality Managers, Technical Managers, Human Resources (HR) Director, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Consultant, Environmental Consultants, Agriculture Managers and Technicians, contracted vegetable growers, Plant Engineers, Quality engineers, occupational physicians and nurses, trade union representatives and representatives from Salihli Plant’s WWTP construction company. Review of available corporate environmental and social documents, including; Environmental & Social (E&S) questionnaires for each plant, internal regulations (Cell phone legislation, Vehicle legislation, Hiring legislation, Termination of employment legislation, Discipline legislation, Leave legislation, Work-hours legislation, Training legislation, Social benefits legislation, Sales team’s premium legislation, Export team’s premium legislation, Advance legislation, Travel expenses legislation) and procedures (Periodical meetings procedures, Security personnel procedure, Orientation procedure, Official correspondence procedure, Fire safety procedure), OHS meeting minutes, emission and discharge permits, ambient noise level permits, drinking and waste water analyses, emission measurements, plant maintenance programs, groundwater usage permissions, fire safety reports for Kiziksa and Karacabey plants, ISO 9001 management system certificates, supplier forms, supplier contracts, collective agreement and 2011 approved investment plan.
