Project Description

Farmakom MB (“Farmakom” or “the Sponsor” or “the Group”) is a diversified group. Its businesses include car battery manufacturing, metal smelting, dairy, foundry, heavy metal mining, and greenhouse-based agriculture. Since 2006, it has invested over €140 million for new equipment in order to add new capacity and improve the environmental standards of its factories, As a result, Farmakom’s workforce doubled from 1,500 to 3,000 employees. The proposed IFC investment is to reduce the number of lenders Farmakom works with, improve banking relationships, and reduce administrative costs. Under the proposed structure, IFC financing will be extended to two or three of the main operating subsidiaries, including FAS (car battery), Zajaca (metal smelting), and Sabac (dairy), with a full guarantee from the ultimate holding company.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

The review of this project consisted of appraising technical, environmental, health, safety and social information submitted by the project sponsor, and field visits in December 2010. The environmental and social (E&S) appraisal team visited dairy/agribusiness factory, milk collection centers and livestock farms in Sabac, the FAS battery plant in Somber, smelter plant in Zajaca, foundry plant in Guca, lead/zinc mine sites in Lece, Serbia and the Lojane site in Macedonia. The E&S team held meetings with the corporate management team of Farmakom, and plant managers at Farmakom plants. The E&S appraisal team also visited communities and surrounding areas of key plant sites.
