Project Description

The new project is the USD50 million expansion of the NL chain, involving the construction/renting and fitting out of five additional DIY stores, one in Kyiv and the remaining four throughout regional cities in Ukraine (Odessa, Donetsk, Sevastopol, Bucha).

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

Nova Liniya (“NL” or the “Company”), an existing IFC client, is a do-it-yourself (“DIY”) retail chain in Ukraine. The proposed Project would be third IFC’s investment with the Company: Environmental and social (E&S) review of the earlier investments was conducted in 2004 and 2006 and was based on World Bank’s Group environmental and social safeguard policies and environmental, health and safety guidelines. The summary of the reviews can be found at the following links: http://www.ifc.org/ifcext/spiwebsite1.nsf/2bc34f011b50ff6e85256a550073ff1c/8531e4332c71a594852576ba000e25a1?opendocument and http://www.ifc.org/ifcext/spiwebsite1.nsf/2bc34f011b50ff6e85256a550073ff1c/92b73095a8881c60852576ba000e280c?opendocument. The existing investment is regularly supervised and its E&S performance has been determined to be in material compliance with at-approval agreements. To evaluate new proposed investment against IFC’s Performance Standards, IFC environmental specialist reviewed environmental and social information presented by the company in respond to an E&S questionnaire; and conducted telephone interviews with the NL’s specialists in May 2010. As well, the Annual Monitoring report dated March 2010 was reviewed as part of the Project’s appraisal.
