Project Description

Tajero Group of companies (“Tajero” or the “Company”), established in the city of Dushanbe, the capital of the Republic of Tajikistan in 2002, is the leading nation-wide importer and distributor of food (milk products, pasta, chocolate, etc.) and beverages (tea) with exclusive contracts from leading foreign Fast Moving Consumer Goods companies. The Company also distributes frozen poultry products and raw meat for the sausage production including its own sausage production plant lanched recently. Tajero’s distribution network covers the majority of stores in Dushanbe and Sogdiiskaya province of the northern Tajikistan through its central office in the city of Dushanbe and a subsidiary in the town of Khojand. The Company services its clients from a 2,000 sq.m. modern refrigerated warehouses; 1,500 sq.m. dry warehouses in Dushanbe as well as refrigerated and dry warehouses located in Khojand (Northern Tajikistan); total vehicle fleet consisted of 43 small size lorries to serve in the city and suburb. Tajero approached IFC to support its investment in a new production of chocolates with or without filling and bar chocolate. The project will support the national producer oriented on tradition-based expectations of customers including quality, chocolate recipes and wrapping design.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

IFC’s environmental and social (E&S) review of the project consisted of a site visit to the Company’s facilities including dry and refrigerated warehouses, a construction site of the future chocolate production, vehicle park and repair workshop areas, all are located within one site; a sausage processing plant located separately; and meetings with Tajero top management and discussions with operational, human resources, health and safety, security managers and specialists. The appraisal also included review of key environmental, health, safety (EHS) and social documentation provided by Tajero in relation to the future chocolate production. Documentation included process and equipment layout, supply chain information, occupational health and fire safety, seismological data, food safety certificates for raw materials and finish goods, air emissions, wastewater effluents and waste management; refrigeration equipment specifications, pest control and land acquisition procedures.
