Project Description

Magic Box is the largest producer in Kyrgyz Republic of small cardboard packages and one of the major label producers (based on offset printing) with exports to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan. The Company produces a variety of small size packaging and printing products for the several industries, including, but not limited to, tea, beverage, confectionary, food, and detergent industries. In 2007 IFC supported the Company in its first capacity expansion in cardboard packages. Through the new investment the Company will (i) diversify its production base by production of flexible and micro corrugated packaging that will serve a wider range of clients; and (ii) improve operational efficiency and expand current sheet fed offset production. The project will include the acquisition, installation and operation of a flexography printing line and a rotogravure line, as well as the modernization of the existing sheet feed offset printing system. The project will also include the construction of an additional production hall next to the existing two halls, with construction features typical of most halls for light industry. Finally, the Company will purchase additional general purpose equipment to improve the production process.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

IFC’s review included meetings with the Magic Box (“the Company”) management team, including the general manager and sponsor of the project, the executive director, the marketing manager, and the technical manager, responsible for occupational health and safety. A site visit to the production facilities, located in the Free Economic Zone (“FEZ”) at the outskirts of Bishkek, was conducted. Documentation reviewed included information and data on Magic Box operations provided by the sponsor and additional information provided by the IFC appraisal team. Information on permits and licenses, human resources data and terms of employment, occupational health and safety data and procedures, fire safety and emergency preparedness, and training programs were also reviewed. IFC’s appraisal included the review of potential risks and impacts of the Company’s printing line which was financed under another active IFC loan (Project 25484 - SEF Magic Box), to verify that operations are compliant with IFC at-approval requirements and that the agreed environmental and social actions have been implemented or are ongoing.
