Galaxy Surfactants Limited (“Galaxy” or the “Company”) is a prominent and established supplier in India of performance and specialty chemicals used by manufacturers of home & personal care (“H&PC”) products including shampoos, toothpastes, liquid soaps etc. The proposed Galaxy project involves the construction of a 60,000 mtpa greenfield plant in Egypt to produce chemicals in the Suez Public Free Zone primarily for export to large, international H&PC companies in MENA, Europe & the Americas. A majority of Galaxy Egypt’s sales will go to multinationals, many of which are currently supplied from Galaxy’s operations in India.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

The review of this project consisted of appraising technical, environmental, health, safety and social information submitted by the project sponsor, and field visits in January 2010. The environmental and social (E&S) appraisal team held meetings with technical and environmental representatives of Galaxy Chemicals Egypt, and discussed the keys issues of Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) with the ESIA consultants and Galaxy representatives. The E&S appraisal team visited the project site and the surrounding communities, located in Suez Governorate, Egypt. The team also checked the some sections of the transportation route for raw materials and products.
