Project Description

Globino Group of Companies (“the Company” or “Globino”) was founded in 1998 and its business started with a small slaughterhouse. Today, Globino is one of the major Ukrainian pig breeders; its core businesses include pig breeding, meat processing; and production of sausages, butter and cheese. Also, it includes brick production and construction companies. Globino has an extensive distribution system covering almost all Ukraine. Globino operations are located in Poltava region of Southern Ukraine. The Project will help Globino expand its capacity to meet growing demand for pork in Ukraine. The expansion by Globino will result in an increase in both quantity and quality product in the marketplace. The Project will: a) boost the production capacity of Globino’s pig farms from 90,000 pigs to 400,000 pigs; b) increase sausage capacity at Globino meat processing plant from 1,700mt/month to 2,500mt/month and modernize the slaughter house as well as increasing the capacity from 50 animals/hour to 150 animals/hour, and c) modernize and expand butter and cheese production at Globino dairy mill. In addition, IFC may be able to contribute advisory services and financial resources related to energy efficiency and cleaner production under its Cleaner Production Lending Facility.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

IFC’s environmental and social review of this project included a visit of an IFC specialist to the Company’s operational office and facilities located in the town of Globino and its outskirts, including the construction site of a new pig farm; a meat processing plant, including a new slaughterhouse being constructed; and a dairy mill for butter and cheese processing. The appraisal also included meetings and discussions with Globino’s management (operational, environmental, health and safety, human resources, legal) and review of key environmental, health, safety and social documentation provided by Globino, including food safety, handling of live animals and basic rules of animal welfare; proper solid waste handling and effluent treatment capacity; selected design documents related to upgrading of the wastewater treatment plant of the dairy plant; relevant approvals and permits of the state supervisory authorities; corporate human resources policy and typical labor contract’s terms and conditions; local occupational health and safety procedures; energy and water efficiency, and land acquisition and leasing procedures.
