Project Description

Jamaica’s sole vertically integrated electric utility and majority owned by Marubeni Corporation of Japan and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), JPS Co is engaged in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity throughout the country. IFC is considering the financing of the Company’s five-year capital expenditures plan that focuses on reducing distribution system losses, improving efficiencies, and expanding renewable generation sources. This primarily involves: technical and non-technical loss reduction initiatives (e.g., installation of automated metering and theft resistant distribution infrastructure), and the development of a 3 MW wind farm (Munro) and a 6.4 MW expansion of an existing hydropower facility on the Maggoty River. IFC previously (2003) financed the Company’s 120 MW combined cycle, oil-fired power plant (Bogue) at Montego Bay (#11367).
