Project Description

The proposed project is to provide long term financing for the Kronospan Serbia particle board production, and melamine lamination of parts of the production, located close to Lapovo in the central part of Serbia. The plant has been under preparation and construction since 2005 and is now under commissioning and will have a capacity of 350,000 m3 of products per year. This production will be based on a mix of fresh wood and wood waste, such as saw mill strips/waste cuttings/chips and sawdust. The non wood raw materials, like resin/glue and lamination foils are all imported.

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

IFC’s environmental and social review of this project included: a site visit to the facility in central Serbia, which is under commissioning; review of information provided by Kronospan Serbia (“Kronospan” or the “Company”) in response to social and environmental questions; review of the Environmental Impact Assessment prepared in accordance with local Serbian regulations; and follow up discussions. Kronospan, as an international corporation is well known to IFC and IFC specialists have, on separate occasions, visited other Kronospan owned and operated facilities (most recently in Russia and Bulgaria) and established an understanding of the corporate management structure and the Kronospan corporation’s systems for social and environmental standards and measures used in management of environmental and social impacts.
