Project Description

Hikma, a Jordanian based pharmaceutical manufacturer, has been an IFC client since 1987. Over the course of IFC’s partnership, Hikma has grown and expanded significantly, becoming the first Arab company to obtain US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) approval in 1996, and listing on the London Stock Exchange in 2005. Hikma has grown from a single plant in Amman, Jordan to its current size of 12 manufacturing plants in nine countries (Algeria, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Portugal, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia and the US). The Company’s focus continues to be on expanding its regional reach in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), to deliver top quality and affordable modern medicines throughout the region. Hikma has approached IFC to request financing as it engages in further acquisition activity in the MENA region

Overview of IFC's Scope of Review

Hikma Pharmaceuticals (Hikma, the Company) is an existing IFC client. IFC’s review of the proposed Project included IFC staff site inspections of two of Hikma’s plants in Amman undertaken in March and September 2010, as part of a routine supervision program. In addition IFC has reviewed Annual Environmental and Social (E&S) Monitoring Reports (AMRs), as well as updates on outstanding Action Plans, routinely submitted to IFC by Hikma to demonstrate compliance with IFC’s Performance Standards (PSs) and Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) guidelines. IFC staff also reviewed detailed information on Hikma’s systems and procedures for managing environmental, labor, health and safety, and community engagement performance, and met with corporate and regional management and staff from the Corporate Responsibility (CR), Quality, and Human Resources (HR) departments to discuss the Company’s ongoing expansion program and its ongoing management of these issues.
