This is a Category B project according to IFC’s Procedure for Environmental and Social Review of Projects because a limited number of specific environmental and social impacts may result which can be avoided or mitigated by adhering to generally recognized performance standards, guidelines or design criteria. The review of this project consisted of a review of technical and environmental/social information provided by the project sponsor. As this project is with an existing client, the results of previous site visits and subsequent performance results reviewed by IFC were also considered in this appraisal.
The following potential environment, health and safety and social impacts of the project were analyzed:
- land acquisition and compensation;
- raw material sourcing, pesticide use and water supply;
- existing and planned management systems for quality, environment, occupational health and safety, and food, life and fire safety;
- liquid and solid waste management; and
- workplace conditions and community relations.
