Project Description

Under the Kyoto Protocol, a majority of developed countries agreed to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) production. In accordance with the dictates of the Protocol, Brazil and Mexico, which do not have GHG emission caps, can generate carbon credits. These carbon credits or Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) can then be sold to countries/companies primarily in Western Europe and Japan that are required to meet specific emission reduction requirements. By purchasing GHG reductions from countries such as Brazil and Mexico as opposed to undertaking expenditures for additional technology, the cost to meet Kyoto goals should be significantly lower than would be possible within their borders. The AgCert project will establish ~1,600 bio-digester sites on medium to large animal rearing farms in Mexico, Brazil and other countries in the region over the next 2 years. Implementation of methane capture and management systems at this level will allow the company to capture an estimated 14 million tons of CERs, and to potentially recycle several thousand cubic meters of water and nutrients (i.e.) through land application of treated effluent each year.
